Healing Doesn’t Have to Happen All at Once

You may know that something needs to change but still feel unsure about where to begin.

Healing can take time, and it does not look the same for everyone.

How I Can HelpSupport for Trauma, Anxiety, and Emotional Regulation

Maybe you feel overwhelmed by everything you are carrying. Maybe past experiences continue to affect the way you feel, think, relate to others, or see yourself. Or perhaps you have reached a point where you are tired of feeling stuck but do not yet know what moving forward is supposed to look like.

My name is Shanice Smith, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Missouri. My approach is rooted in the belief that healing is personal, that every person deserves access to it, and that meaningful change can happen without rushing the process.

I bring empathy, collaboration, and respect for your individual strengths and needs into our work together. My goal is to help you move from feeling overwhelmed or stuck toward greater clarity, confidence, and a stronger sense of control over your life.

Trauma and difficult life experiences can affect much more than the memory of what happened. They can influence your sense of safety, relationships, emotions, confidence, and the way you respond to everyday situations.

You may feel anxious, disconnected, easily overwhelmed, unsure of yourself, or caught in patterns that are difficult to change. Therapy can offer space to make sense of these experiences without asking you to move faster than you are ready.

In our work together, we may focus on processing painful experiences, understanding trauma-related thoughts and emotions, reducing overwhelm, strengthening emotional regulation, challenging beliefs shaped by trauma, and reconnecting with your confidence and sense of self.

Healing does not require you to forget what happened. It can mean learning to carry your experiences differently so they no longer hold the same power over your present.

What Therapy With Me Is LikeCollaborative, Compassionate, and Individualized

My approach to therapy is collaborative, compassionate, and individualized.

I do not believe there is one path to healing that works for everyone. Your experiences, needs, strengths, and readiness matter, and they should shape the work we do together.

I want therapy to feel like a space where you can slow down, build awareness, ask questions, and explore your experiences without feeling pressured or judged.

Together, we will identify what is most important to you, explore what may be contributing to the way you are feeling, and determine which tools or approaches may be most helpful.

Some sessions may focus on understanding patterns or processing difficult experiences. Others may focus on practical coping strategies, mindfulness, or helping you feel more grounded in the present.

The goal is not to force change. The goal is to help you create change that feels meaningful, manageable, and aligned with what you need.

“

My goal as I partner with you on your wellness journey is to create meaningful change at a pace that feels right for you.

My Approach to CounselingFlexible, Evidence-Based Support for Trauma Recovery

My clinical approach is flexible because every client is different.

I draw from multiple therapeutic approaches and techniques based on the needs of the individual person in front of me. My work is especially grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and mindfulness-based practices.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT, helps us understand the relationship between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

Difficult experiences can sometimes create thought patterns that reinforce fear, self-doubt, anxiety, or feelings of helplessness. Together, we can identify those patterns and explore healthier, more balanced ways of understanding yourself and your experiences.

Cognitive Processing Therapy

Cognitive Processing Therapy, or CPT, is an evidence-based approach often used to support people who have experienced trauma.

Traumatic experiences can shape deeply held beliefs about safety, trust, control, self-worth, or responsibility. CPT helps us explore those beliefs, understand how they developed, and work toward perspectives that support healing rather than keeping you stuck.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

Mindfulness can help you become more aware of your thoughts, emotions, and physical responses without immediately becoming overwhelmed by them.

We may use mindfulness strategies to help you feel more grounded, strengthen self-awareness, and develop greater ability to stay present during difficult moments.

Your therapy will not be limited to one technique. We will work together to determine what feels useful, effective, and appropriate for you.

A Little More About MeThe Person Within the Therapist

My Background & Why This Work Matters

Access, Healing, and Meaningful Change

My professional journey has consistently centered on helping people access care, resources, safety, and healing.

I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science from the University of Missouri–Kansas City in 2015. Soon after, I supported Black and Brown women during pregnancy, helping them connect with resources and tools that promoted their health and well-being. That experience deepened my understanding of how access, environment, systems, and support shape both physical and mental health.

In 2022, I earned my Master of Social Work from the University of Missouri–Kansas City and began working in psychiatric care. In 2023, I transitioned into full-time trauma therapy, supporting people who had experienced emotional, sexual, and physical abuse.

Across these roles, I have learned that healing is personal. There is no single timeline or definition of what it should look like. I value helping people discover what healing means for them while reconnecting with safety, confidence, choice, and hope.

Beyond the Therapy Room

Stories, Curiosity, and Time to Recharge

Outside of counseling, I enjoy reading—especially science fiction and true crime.

Reading gives me an opportunity to slow down, explore different perspectives, and spend time immersed in a good story.

It is one of the ways I recharge and make space for myself outside of my professional role.
